Many young people in the US struggle with mental illness. Often overlooked, or dismissed as "growing pains,” recent studies show that this issue is closer to a hidden epidemic:

  • 17% of school-aged children (6 – 17) experience mental health disorders*
  • 30.6% of young adults (18 – 25) experience mental health disorders**

The PBS documentary Hiding in Plain Sight: Youth Mental Illness takes an in-depth look at the daily lives of 20 young people who live with mental health conditions. Interviews with these youths along with their friends, parents, teachers, healthcare providers, and independent mental health experts paint a picture of seemingly overwhelming obstacles, hope, and resilience.
