Embrace change mtime20160801120615focalnone

Humans often like consistency. So much so, that many food franchises have built their success around giving customers the same familiar experience at every location.

It appears, as the saying goes, that “we like what we know.” But does that mean that change goes against human nature? Debates about human nature often focus on what is assumed to be automatically or naturally built in to our identities. However, behavioral science now suggests that our capacity to adapt, change and grow may be a more significant characteristic of human nature than previously thought.

Research indicates that cultivating a growth mindset can help to nurture our more adaptive selves, helping us to better adjust and succeed in life. Here are some practical suggestions to help encourage a growth mindset when you are faced with change.

Embrace the Impermanence: The good times are great while they last, and the not-so-good ones will eventually pass. Accepting the idea of impermanence is a good way to engage a growth mindset and help you to roll with changes as they come.

Mindfully Decide Where You Stand: Often, our instinctive reaction to change is to dig in and say no. If the change negatively impacts you, that may be the right approach. In cases where the change will have a neutral or positive effect, not so much. When faced with change, take a moment to breathe, calm your thoughts and try to think mindfully/objectively about how it really affects you. This will help you develop a thoughtful response instead of just reacting instinctively.

Re-Label Your Feelings: The words we use for self-talk can directly affect how our bodies and minds respond to change. Something as simple as substituting the words I’m excited for I’m nervous can help you reframe your perspective and embrace change. For example, if have a big presentation coming up, try reframing any anxiety you might be feeling as excitement and eagerness to share your thoughts with a broader audience.

Focus on the Opportunity: Having an optimistic perspective can help make the most of change, enabling you to identify the good that can come from it. Even when it’s unexpected, change often comes with an upside or two. Try actively looking for the opportunities in every change to more easily embrace it.
